Daphne Bokota the Greek presenter of Eurovision since 1988 until 2004 and Jeux Sans Frontieres from 1993 to 1997 for the Greek television gave us an interview in order to celebrate the International JSF DAY 2010 and she talked about her memories from JSF.
• We asked her about her memories from the first show that Greece participated in JSF 1993 in Wales. She told us that she remembers that the games were taking place at Bodelwyddan castle and the weather wasn’t so good especially at night. For the Greek team JSF was something new and the two first shows of JSF at Rhyl was traumatic, however the experience was amazing.
• Dafne Bokota told us about the greek show of JSF 1994 at the island of Poros were the shooting of the show lasted until 07:00 the morning. The show started at 18:00 and finished at 07:00 in the morning. There were problems with the constructions of games. Some of the games were at the sea and because of wavelets some constructions had problems. Despite of the problems the production was spectacular with an amazing weather. Poros remains unforgettable for all, until now, but no one remember the problems but remember how unique was Poros and the Greek hospitality.
• About the Greek teams, told us that the teams every year were stronger and more “professional”. Dafne told us that the problem with the Greek teams was that they didn’t have collectively spirit (probably its common on the Greek DNA). Although it was common in all teams the friendship and the fun.
• We asked her if the changes that happen at 1996 influenced the show and the answer was positive. RAI was the major force of the show and the cost of the show was huge.
• The last year that Dafne Bokota was at JSF was the year 1997 because she was pregnant and she took the decision to leave the games and the trips. Until now she hasn’t regret it, but watching as a viewer JSF or ESC has no interest but having all this experience she knows why and what will happen but she cant intervene.
• She has many good memories and she still remembers the nights with her colleagues, and their conversations. “We was a family” she told us; we lived together from May till September. She remember Ettore , shouted from his position, ”Dafne, turn the monitor upside downs to see us first” . Also she told us that until now she is in touch with her colleagues.
• Although was some bad moments with irritability, anxiety and fatigue. She remembers to be in Greece only 4 days and she had to traveling again. Once, because of all these, she dropt her suitcase down the stairs and kicked it to get off!
• We asked her that some countries organized two shows and some other only one or none like Switzerland. She told us that all these decisions were taking according the budget and concerning the Swiss TV the shows of 1993 was very difficult because of the low budget.
• Dafne Bokota believes that JSF are missing from television and anything else related to JSF are meaningless. Also she revealed that she have a proposal for a show like JSF for the Greek TV but unfortunately Greek television turned to other things like the shows and realities.
• Dafne Bokota feels lucky about her professional life because she had the chance to work almost with all the European televisions and she learned how to do television, presentation and professional “ethos”.
• According ERT (Greek National Television) Dafne Bokota says the ERT should find its way and where ERT wanted to focus and the Greek national television should finally have a major role in the Greek tv scene.
• Finally we asked her what JSF means for her and she told us that JSF was the best event in her carrier despite the majority of the people equates her with the Eurovision Song Contest. She becomes more cosmopolitan and she learned that there are rules in the job and hurts her the Greek television of today.
